Embattled Icelandic minister’s future more complicated than thought

Sacking Icelandic Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Jón Bjarnason could cause a myriad of unintended negative consequences for the government, as ministers found out at an extended cabinet meeting this morning.

As reported earlier on IceNews Jón is under pressure and neither coalition party leader has outwardly expressed support for keeping him in the cabinet.

But he has at least two Left Green allies within the cabinet (Guðfríður Lilja Grétarsdóttir and Ögmundur Jónasson, Minister of the Interior), who could in theory give up their portfolios in support – thereby throwing the cabinet into total chaos.

Also if Jón Bjarnason decided to protest his cabinet sacking by resigning from the government altogether, the coalition could lose its razor thin majority and the whole government would fall apart without the appointment of a third coalition partner party.

The cabinet’s job was therefore to decide how to deal with the dispute in a manner that keeps Alþingi MPs satisfied and does not destroy the government.

Independent MP Guðmundur Steingrímsson told Vísir.is that he would consider working alongside the government to prevent its fall in the event that Jón Bjarnason resigns. He would, of course, have certain demands in return — certain political issues he would want support on.

Concrete details of Jón’s future have not yet been formed.
